An 80-bed ultra-modern orthopaedic centre has been commissioned at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital in the Bono Region to enhance specialised healthcare delivery in the middle belt and beyond.

The facility, known as the Obaapanin Abena Henewaa (Tiakaa) Orthopaedic Centre, was officially inaugurated on Friday, April 17, 2026, during a ceremony attended by clergy, health professionals, traditional authorities and residents.

The project was undertaken through a partnership between the Methodist Church Ghana, the German Government and the Ghana Community Niederbayern, led by Nana Kwame Busia, a native of Wenchi, who dedicated the facility in memory of his late mother.

Speaking at the event, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, said the project reflects the Church’s commitment to supporting national development through investments in healthcare.

He noted that access to quality healthcare remains essential and reaffirmed the Church’s resolve to contribute to improving health infrastructure across the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Wenchi Methodist Hospital, Nana Alexander Kwaku Kyei, said the new centre would address long-standing challenges of congestion in the hospital’s orthopaedic unit.

According to him, the facility is expected to improve service delivery and position Wenchi as a referral point for orthopaedic care within the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Ashanti and Western North regions, as well as parts of northern Ghana.

Valued at €630,000, the centre comprises male and female wards, children’s wards, private rooms, a training unit for health personnel and modern equipment, including patient lifting systems to support care delivery.

Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive, Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, described the project as a timely intervention that aligns with government efforts to expand access to specialised healthcare and reduce pressure on major referral hospitals.

She said the initiative complements ongoing reforms under the National Health Insurance Authority aimed at improving affordability and access to healthcare services.

The Paramount Queenmother of the Wenchi Traditional Area, Nana Afoa Pokuaa Dankoto II, commended the Methodist Church Ghana for its contribution to healthcare and education, describing the project as a lasting investment for the area.

An orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital, Dr Sibiri Ballu, expressed optimism that the facility would improve the management of fractures, trauma and other musculoskeletal conditions by reducing delays in treatment.

Nana Kwame Busia, who supported the project, urged management of the hospital to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to sustain its benefits.

The centre is expected to serve patients from across Ghana and neighbouring countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mali.
