Great Olympics patron Nana Akuoko Sarpong dead

Accra Great Olympics has been formally notified of the death of its patron and Paramount Chief of Agogo, Nana Akuoko Sarpong, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in the club’s history.

A high-powered delegation from the Agogo Traditional Area journeyed from Asante Akyem to Accra to deliver the news in person, underlining the deep bond between the late chief and the capital-based side.

Led by the Adontenhene of Agogo, Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, the delegation included traditional leaders and members of the bereaved family, who described the visit as both a duty and a gesture of respect to a club Nana held dear.

“We are here today as members of the Agogo Traditional Council and leaders of Nana Akuoko Sarpong’s funeral committeeâ€¦ today, we are here to officially confirm that the news is indeed true.”

For decades, Nana Akuoko Sarpong was more than a ceremonial figure at Olympics. His association with the club stretched back to the 1970s, during which he played a pivotal role in its growth and stability.

He served as chairman of the management committee on three occasions and supported the team’s ventures on the continental stage, cementing his legacy as one of its most influential figures.

Club chairman Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio led tributes upon receiving the delegation, recalling the chief’s unwavering dedication and personal attachment to the team.

“He dedicated a great part of his life to Accra Great Olympics and we shall remember himâ€¦”

Great Olympics has pledged its full support to the family ahead of the one-week observation on June 4, with the wider football fraternity expected to join traditional authorities in honouring a man whose imprint on the game remains indelible.
