Tensions have flared at the Adjen Kotoku onion market after armed men, believed to be linked to a rival faction, reportedly stormed the area in an attempt to take control of operations.

The incident is said to be tied to growing claims of political interference in the management of the market, raising fears among traders over worsening insecurity and instability.

The situation also coincides with reports that trucks transporting onions to Ghana have been blocked in Nigeria, in what traders believe is a retaliatory move connected to an earlier dispute involving some Ghanaian operators.

Speaking to Citi News, spokesperson for the Onion Sellers Association, Mustapha Sulemana Talimu, called for immediate government intervention to prevent the situation from spiralling further.

“As I speak, they are with guns… they said they don’t want anybody in the market,” he said.

Talimu indicated that previous attempts to resolve the impasse had not been sustained, allowing tensions to resurface.

Traders are now appealing for urgent security deployment to restore calm at the market and safeguard the steady supply of onions to consumers across the country.
