Ghana’s opening night at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in late drama and historic celebration as Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to seal a 1-0 victory over Panama in a tense Group L encounter at the Toronto Stadium.

The match appeared destined for a stalemate until the 90+5th minute, when the midfielder calmly converted a low cross from substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Legendary former captain Asamoah Gyan was present in the stands, witnessing a moment that symbolised both continuity and renewal for the Black Stars on football’s biggest stage.

Newly appointed as Ghana Football Association National Teams Ambassador, Gyan had played an active role in building the atmosphere around the team’s campaign, leading spirited fan engagement activities across Canada in the build-up to kickoff.

Following the final whistle, Gyan turned his attention to those fans, using social media platform X to acknowledge their impact on a night defined by tension and endurance.

“Yesterday, the whole nation roared as one. Thank you, Ghana. Your energy carried us through. We did it together,” Gyan wrote.

While celebrating the breakthrough win, the former captain also stressed the need for composure and focus as the tournament progresses, urging the squad to remain disciplined with tougher challenges ahead.

“To the Management, the Technical Team, and the playing body â€” we know the mission. Let’s soldier on to the next game. May God continue to bless our homeland Ghana.”

The result gives Ghana a strong start in Group L, but the focus now shifts quickly to sustaining momentum ahead of the next game against England on June 23.
